Local funeral director undertakes Group Captain’s funeral

Top brass from the RAF were in attendance at the recent funeral of Group Captain Stephen Newton, aged 47.

The military funeral with full honours was arranged by Walding & Son of High Street, Uxbridge and the funeral service, led by Padre Graham Brown, was held at Breakspear Crematorium in Ruislip.

The coffin, dressed with flags and RAF regalia, was carried by six military pallbearers along with two escorts and a standard bearer. As a mark of respect to the seniority of Group Captain Stephen Newton, a VIP Transport Plane made a low level flyover of the crematorium.

Amongst the numerous civilian and military mourners were representatives of both the Queen and the Duke of York, Air Office Commanding from two RAF divisions and of the Mayor of Hillingdon.

Commenting on conducting, such a major military funeral, Gabby Sanchez of Walding & Son said “We were delighted to have been chosen to handle such an important funeral for the RAF. As you would expect, the whole service was carried out with great dignity and true military precision”.
