Six of the best for Lodge
Brothers
When Ian Hanks and Jason Lane received the Diploma
in Funeral Service Management, it meant that six
members of Lodge Brothers had now attained the
highest qualification for the funeral industry.
Prior to Ian and Jason receiving their awards,
from the Institute of Leadership Management and
the National Association of Funeral Directors,
four members of the Lodge family had received
the award. These were Robert Lodge (Chairman of
Lodge Brothers) along with fellow Directors Andrew
Lodge, Beverley Harris (nee Lodge) and Janet Norris
(nee Lodge).
Ian Hanks has worked for Lodge Brothers since
November 2000 and is Depot Manager of their A.E.Smith
& Son branch in Swindon. Commenting on achieving
the qualifications Ian explained “In addition
to completing twenty workbooks on various management
techniques, I also had to produce a 5000 word
project relating to the funeral business. Because
I come from a retail background, I chose researching
the viability of opening an in-house florists
for my project. The subjects I covered included
planning the layout of the florists, obtaining
estimates from suppliers for flowers and sundries,
local and international sales channels, advertising
and marketing. Meeting other managers at the monthly
seminars certainly helped me to relate to the
every day problems and challenge of working as
a funeral director”.
Area Manager Jason Lane is responsible for Lodge
Brothers branches of Barnes & Sons in the
Shepherds Bush and E.A.Langley in Paddington areas
of West London. Explaining why he began the Diploma
course Jason said “I successfully obtained
the Funeral Directing Diploma in 2001 and wanted
to enhance my industry knowledge and working practices.
As my project had to enhance our profession I
decided to produce a training manual for funeral
operatives. This included procedures on registering
a death, the duties of a coroner and basic funeral
arranging. The aim was to further their knowledge
and understanding of the profession so that they
were able to deliver a higher standard of service
to clients”.
