Wroughton took the honours in the
Wiltshire Women’s Bowling Association’s
annual Coronation Triples Tournament.
Despite dismal weather this year’s
event proved extremely popular and attracted 200
bowlers representing their local clubs.
The tournament, sponsored by Swindon-based
funeral directors A.E.Smith and Son, was held
simultaneously at Highworth, Wootten Bassett and
Wroughton Bowls Clubs on Wednesday, July 27.
At each venue 20 teams were divided
into two sections with each team playing three
matches of six ends with shots for the telling
factor for deciding the overall placings.
The eventual winners were the Wroughton
team of Jill Webb, Carol Woodward and Elizabeth
Noke with a winning score of 30 shots for and
15 shots against.
The runners-up spot went to Salisbury,
who competed at Highworth, with a score of 26
for and eight against.
County Ground, playing at Wootten
Bassett, took third place with 26 for and 14 against.
The Highworth venue also produced
the fourth-placed team with Calne finishing with
a score of 25 for and 12 against.
Honourary Secretary of the Wiltshire
County Women’s Bowling Association Janet
Seal said: “Even though the weather was
grey and overcast everyone enjoyed the day. We
would like to congratulate all the bowlers who
participated and offer our special thanks to the
sponsors A E Smith and Son for supporting this
ever popular event”.
